Welcome to the Society for Commercial Archeology!
To celebrate the founding of the Society for Commercial Archeology in 1977, we're throwing a 35th Anniversary celebration at the location of the largest concentration of mid-century resort architecture in the United States: Wildwood, New Jersey! Mark your calendars for the 2012 SCA Conference, "Wildwood Daze", to be held September 26-29, 2012.
The conference will highlight transportation's impact in the growth of tourism in coastal New Jersey. Two tours will explore famous transportation routes including the New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail, the Pinelands Heritage Trail, the Blackhorse and Whitehorse Pikes, and the Bayshore Heritage Byway. These excursions will allow attendees to compare and contrast cultural landscapes from the mid-century or "Doo Wop" resort era to that of the "Nation's Oldest Seashore Resort" of Cape May. SCA members will also explore Atlantic City including the iconic Lucy the Margate Elephant, which recently celebrated her 130th birthday, and explore commercial ruins within America's first National Reserve, the New Jersey Pinelands.
Don't miss this opportunity to see the best of Southern New Jersey's man-made commercial landscapes and significant natural wonders, see your old SCA friends and make a few new ones!
The Society for Commercial Archeology announces Falling by the Wayside, an annual list of the ten most endangered roadside places in the United States.
The list showcases the diversity of roadside places and highlights the issues and challenges facing preservation of these important resources. Threats can include natural weathering, economic hardship, neglect, abandonment, inappropriate zoning, lack of maintenance, demolition and even a setback to a project to preserve a roadside place.
The SCA's 2010 Conference, Odyssey in the Ozarks, was a huge success! Stay tuned for more details on the conference and what lies ahead for our organization...

Vintage Roadside, a t-shirt company celebrating roadside culture and the unique history of bygone businesses of the 1930s - 1960s, co-produced the limited edition t-shirt for the SCA's Odyssey in the Ozarks conference.
In addition to researching the graphics and history of mid-century drive-ins, skating rinks, tiki and cocktail lounges, bowling alleys, and roadside attractions, Vintage Roadside also writes a preservation-themed road trip blog, and works to document disappearing roadside architecture and signage. They also partner with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, preservation-focused non-profits, and existing independent businesses to promote the importance of preserving recent past architecture and history.
The mission of Vintage Roadside is to keep the stories of “mom and pop” businesses alive so that today’s travelers might have more awareness of these roadside treasures of the past and perhaps be influenced to help preserve surviving mid-century establishments for the enjoyment of future generations. Their passion and experience make for a perfect partnership in creating a wearable souvenir based on the conference logo designed by SCA member Rick Kilby's design studio, Kilby Creative.
The result of the collaboration between the SCA, Kilby Creative and Vintage Roadside will be a must-have T-shirt you’ll proudly wear for years. You will want one even if you aren’t able to attend this year’s conference!*
* There are a small number of t-shirts remaining!
