Editorial Guidelines for the SCA Journal

The editors of the Journal of the Society for Commercial Archeology are always eager to publish quality works relating to the topics of historic preservation, roadside history... The following are options available to prospective authors:

Mechanics

Query with an abstract and an estimated word count are encouraged. Send to journal@sca-roadside.org. Printed manuscripts may be submitted using the instructions below.

The Journal is is composed using desktop publishing software. If your manuscript is accepted, you will need to provide an electronic copy on a Windows-compatible disk in the MS Word format. Please write you name, e-mail address and telephone number on the disk label.

Formatting

• Include a Cover page that includes the author’s name and a two or three sentence abstract summarizing the content of the article before the first paragraph of the text.
• 1" margins on all sides.
• Justify text on the left margin only.
• Double-space the entire manuscript, including quotes and references.
• Font size of 11 or 12 points.
• Lead author's last name and page number in upper right corner of the second and subsequent pages.
• Footnotes at the end of the article.
• For abbreviations, capitalization and citations consult the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2003).
• For spelling and usage consult Meriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary.

Contents

• Write in a clear, simple style. Use the active voice whenever possible. Avoid overly long sentences.
• Please keep you word count between 2,000 and 3,000.
• Break up long sections of text with subheadings. All nouns, verbs, pronouns and modifiers in the subhead should be capitalized.
• Photographs enhancing the content of the manuscript are most welcomed. See the notes below.
• Articles are edited for clarity and space. When extensive revision is required, the manuscript is returned to the author for approval.

Illustrations

Illustrations may be submitted in one of two formats:

• Photographic prints should be at least 8" x 10"; overlays may be included to indicate crop area. Postcards and other ephemera are acceptable for reproduction.
• Scans of photographs and other illustrations should be at least 300 dpi and saved as untouched, unaltered, and uncompressed TIFF files. Scan made with a drum scanner produce the best results. Submit the files on a Windows-compatible disk. Please write you name, e-mail address and telephone number on the disk label.

Regardless of media, each illustration should be labeled to match the text. For example, if the text instructions refer to "PICTURE 1," the accompanying illustration should be labeled accordingly.

We recommend that you submit at least five images with your article.

PHOTOCOPIES OF IMAGES ARE UNACCEPTABLE.

You are responsible for securing permission for and citing any copyrighted material. If you are in doubt, consult this web page.

Manuscripts are evaluated by persons knowledgeable about the topic of the work and the Journal editor. Many upcoming editions of the journals will focus on themes. Contact the editor if you would like to know more about upcoming editions.
